Great Flavors & Wonderful Scenery

Stitched Image – ACTUS-G with Leica SL2 & ACTAR-24

With 14 book publications behind his name and over three decades of experience as a chef, we may well consider Heinz von Holzen an authority on Indonesian food. During his entire professional career Heinz managed to combine his passion for authentic food with a passion for photography.

It probably all started with a strong desire to keep moving and discovering new things. As a youngster Swiss born Heinz von Holzen aspired a career as an engineer. He soon got bored sitting behind a desk and found a position as an apprentice cook. Working as a chef at various first class hotels in Europe, Australia and Asia gave him the opportunity to see the world and along the way his camera has been his travel companion. Heinz developed the good practice of visually documenting the recipes he created. Especially after he had started working in Singapore. “It was then in Singapore that I became hooked on photography, which allowed me to visually document many great dishes that we prepared.” And he didn’t settle for mediocre results, not in cooking nor in his photography.

Working as a chef in Singapore, Heinz was asked to become the executive chef of the new Grand Hyatt at the Isle of Bali. Shortly after his arrival, now 32 years ago, Heinz by chance met a publisher. He was impressed by Heinz’ food shots and encouraged him to publish his first book on Balinese cuisine. It became a success and many would follow.

After 4 ½ years at the Grand Hyatt Bali Heinz decided to resign. Together with his wife Puji, he set up a company specializing in commercial photography, advertising and food consulting. The photographing chef now had become a professional photographer. However, he wasn't happy, as he enjoyed photography a lot less now it had become his bread and butter. So he went back to his first passion, food. This resulted in the opening of Bumbu Bali, a restaurant and cooking school, which was soon followed by a second restaurant and a small hotel.

A good chef remains inquisitive throughout his career and Heinz’ photography has probably benefited greatly from his investigative nature. “During the past 32 years I was utmost fortunate to be able to travel extensively across Indonesia. Whenever I got stuck with answers about food in a specific part of Indonesia, I searched for a reliable contact in that region. Next I purchased a ticket, flew to this region and spent some time with the experts, home cooks, at markets, ceremonies, kitchens, road side food stalls and cooked, wrote recipes and took lots and lots of photos.

All this would not have been possible without the full hearted support of my family and the teams in our restaurants.”

To photograph the beautiful landscapes he travels and the venues he visits, Heinz acquired a Cambo WRS system with a Phase One digital back. His favorite tool to document the dishes he creates is the Cambo Actus-G paired with a Leica SL2 and ACTAR-90 lens. Complemented with Cambo’s adapter to enable the use of Mamiya RB/RZ lenses. “What I love most about the Actus and shooting food is the tilt and shift capabilities and with it the great DOF. Simply amazing. No need for photoshop. Yes the system is slow, but offers photography pure. Then again, when combined – as in my case – with a Leica SL2 body, it gives you total control over your picture.”

Heinz was introduced to the Cambo brand by Warren Kiong, owner of Primaimaging. A valued Cambo partner who has decades of experience in representing professional brands from his beautiful Jakarta based studio. As Heinz expresses his appreciation: “We are incredibly fortunate here in Indonesia to not only have a distributer of all Cambo products, but also an owner gentleman behind prima-imaging which does an amazing amount of extra work for the photographic community. Absolutely nothing is too much, and their fast expertise and know-how in high-end camera gear is extremely useful when questions or challenges arise.”

It seems appropriate to end with one of Heinz von Holzen’s recipes here. Thank you for sharing this with us Heinz.

Cambo Actus, Coming Soon, News

Cambo ACXL-366

The Actus GFX announced earlier this year is a portable solution with geared shifts designed with the GFX user in mind.  For those of you who prefer a full-size view camera for in studio use Cambo is happy to announce that the Actus-XL is now available with GFX bayonet.

ACXL-366 is the conversion kit from Ultima to Actus-XL/GFX. It is the same as the upgrade from Ultima to Actus-XL35, but with a dedicated GFX bayonet holder.

This is the upgrade for existing Ultima owners. It gives them the possibility to add Actus versatility to their Ultima cameras. The main advantage is the way the body flips from horizontal to portrait around the bayonet.

GFX-Actus-XL

Now the Actus XL can join the rest of the Actus family with compatibility with standard DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, digital backs, and now mirrorless medium format options.

Pricing and availability coming soon.

Cambo will show MBX series of stands released last year, the new lineup of Actar lenses, as well as, the entire range of Actus cameras, including the new specially designed for the needs of educators, Actus EDU.

MBX Stand.
The new classed Mid-range studio stand will suit many photographers shooting with medium format camera systems. It is placed between the entry level Monostand and the heavier duty UST/UBS stand series.

The MBX stand combines several advantages of the various Cambo stands, such as a ball bearing movement for effortless vertical adjustment as well as rotation of the crossarm independently of vertical adjustments, all in a lighter, easier to assemble format.

Actus EDU.

The Actus EDU features an interchangeable bayonet holder for various system cameras. The top part holding the camera mount can easily be replaced. A locking lever secures it firmly in place.

Having the ability of rapidly changing this AC-78E holder makes it possible to always have a fitting solution within seconds when students bring their own camera bodies.

Cambo Wide RS, News

First Test Images: WRE-CA with an IQ3-100 + Canon 17mm f/4.0 TS E.

Many have been asking, and the time has finally come to shed a little more light onto the WRE-CA powered Canon lens adapter for the WRS Platform.

img_3647

Based on the popular ACB-CA design used with the Actus system, the WRE-CA allows for full aperture control on Canon lenses while they are mounted onto a WRS Camera body.

When used in combination with a digital back with electronic shutter (Such as the Phase One IQ3-100) this system allows for photographers to use their existing Canon lens options while taking photographs.

Not every lens however will be a great fit. In order to best utilize the WRE-CA, lenses with larger image circles such as the Canon T/S lenses are recommended. If you are comfortable with cropping your image and not using the entire sensor space, any Canon EF lens will fit with this adapter. Just be aware that although a lens may fit, lenses that focus using the Canon STM system will not be able to manually focus since the motor does not engage.

We here at Cambo USA just received our first hands on chance to use the WRE-CA and wanted to share a few test images to show what is capable with this unit.

The first lens I tried with the system was the Canon 24mm TS E. The lens as expected covered the image sensor and I was able to take a few images, but I was more interested to see if any shifting was possible using this solution. The answer is, not much. 24ts-5-shiftAt 5mm of shift, corners just barely become visible. However pushing any farther results in much more noticeable vignetting.

24ts-10-shiftThe real test however came with using the ultra wide 17mm lens.

screen-shot-2017-02-10-at-2-48-58-pm Behold! The Cambo USA Office kitchen! While not so much a sight in itself, when paired with the resolving power of the IQ3-100 I am very impressed with the amount of detail you can get out of a lens that was designed without the thought of ever being used on such a high powered capture source.

screen-shot-2017-02-10-at-2-51-34-pm

1:1 crop of the kitchen test.

img_3651

While it may seem strange at first, the design of the WRE-CA makes it very easy to see and adjust the aperture of whichever lens is attached. Using the LCD screen built onto the unit to visually see an indication of your aperture setting, while adjusting with the dial on the right hand side of the unit was very pleasant.

cambowreca585

screen-shot-2017-02-10-at-2-25-54-pmAlthough I could have metered a bit more carefully for these images, I wanted to show that the image circle of the 17mm is very capable of resolving over the large 100MP sensor of the IQ3-100.

screen-shot-2017-02-10-at-2-25-32-pm

Unlike its 24mm brother, the 17mm does not allow for any shifts over 3mm, but I’m still impressed as its use as an ultra wide option. I hope to do a lot more thorough testing very soon.

Who would benefit the most from this product? Photographers looking for a super wide angle solution for their high megapixel medium format backs. Or photographers who may already have invested in a Canon T/S solution before moving to medium format and wish to utilize existing equipment.

For more information or to purchase your own WRE-CA, contact your local Cambo dealer today. The WRE-CA is available for order now.

**Update 2/14/17**

Richard from Cambo also shared this image with me using the 17mm. This one is a lot more interesting than the kitchen test image. Downscaled for web use.
